African Black soap is a hand made all natural soap containing pure unrefined Shea butter. It is a highly effective moisturising & cleansing skin care product containing anti-bacterial & anti-fungal properties. African Black Soap has been used for centuries in Africa, is actually brown in colour with a soft and delicate texture and an earthy fragrance.
African Black Soap is made in small batches by hand, at village level, using an age old traditional recipe, it consists of virgin palm kernel oil, pure unrefined Shea Butter and lye produced from the ashes of plantain skins and the bark of a local tree called Agow. It is grainy with visible specks of plantain and Shea nut hulls. In several African countries, it is the only soap used by mothers to wash their new born babies as its purity makes it gentle and non-drying.
The plantain plant is a natural source of vitamins A, E and Iron.
The skin of the plantain is dried to a precise texture under the hot African sun, roasted in a clay oven where the heat is kept constant in order to achieve a particular texture and smell. The roasting of the plantain skins determines the colour of the soap. The longer they are roasted, the darker the soap.
There are no animal fats, no chemicals as preservatives, no added colour or fragrances. African Black Soap is also an excellent cleanser for acne prone skin.
